Behind her parents´ back, Monserrat holds a relationship with Jose Luis, a navy Corporal, and she is not planning to marry Sebastian de Icaza, the man her mother practically imposed to her at her own convenience.

On the other hand, José Luis knows that Monserrat´s family will never accept him because he doesn´t have a promising future he could offer to Monserrat.

At the same time, Alejandro, a workman from a near ranch, finds out that his father is Don Benjamín Almonte, a cruel, powerful and wealthy man, who dies minutes after revealing his son the truth.

Alejandro is not happy to receive this news but, that night, life compensates for him by getting to meet Monserrat, of whom he immediately falls in love.

Monserrat ends her engagement with Sebastián and Graciela gets really angry about this since she had seen in that marriage the only way to solve their financial problems.

Because of this, Graciela starts seeking another prospect for her daughter, and it is then that she hears Alejandro is Don Benjamín´s heir, which makes him the perfect candidate for Monserrat.

In her desperation, and feeling that she is about to get poor, Graciela asks Alejandro for financial help; he accepts to support the Mendoza family only if Graciela allows him to court her daughter. Graciela doesn´t hesitate and she accepts the proposal right away, promising Alejandro that Monserrat will never know about this.

What life took from me / Lo que la vida me robó telenovela full story On the other hand, Graciela and Dimitrio, Monserrat´s brother, discover that she is having a relationship with a simple corporal and they embark on the task of separating them just to avoid putting into a risk the romance that could arise between Monserrat and Alejandro. It doesn´t take much time for them to achieve their goal and they make Monserrat change her image of Jose Luis when the authorities blame him for a crime he didn´t commit.
The situation complicates when Graciela realizes that Monserrat is not planning to get involved with Alejandro, and this is why she is compelled to tell her daughter the truth about their financial situation. So, despite her principles and knowing that this is the only way to help her family and prevent them from going bankrupt, Monserrat accepts to marry Alejandro.

Just when she has accepted him, Jose Luis reappears to tell her the truth and explain what really happened, assuring that he really loves her. But it is too late now, she already became Alejandro Almonte´s wife. Against her will, Monserrat moves to Alejandro´s ranch. Their marriage is a living hell at the beginning since they don´t trust each other, but little by little, Monserrat’s feelings towards Alejandro start to change.

Running away from justice, Jose Luis arrives in Alejandro´s ranch to work as the foreman, taking over someone else´s personality.

A good friendship immediately grows between them since they both share the same values. This situation makes Monserrat really uncomfortable, and she won´t dare to tell her husband the truth about his new employee since she is afraid Alejandro might leave her now that she has fallen in love with him.
Monserrat, Alejandro and José Luis must carry off a series of obstacles destiny will put in front of them, all these in order to recover what life took from them in the past: love and the opportunity to be happy. Monserrat will have to make a final decision, having her heart as her only adviser.

We at Kenya soap operas know how much you love telenovelas and are dying to know what she will do. Not to worry, we will tell you.

The Tempest Citizen Tv Recap

 The Tempest Citizen Tv

Corona de lagrimas is now over and citizen tv has now introduced a new soap "The Tempest" .The Tempest  begins on  a boat, tossed about in a storm. The storm strikes a ship carrying Alonso, Ferdinand, Sebastian, Antonio, Gonzalo, Stephano, and Trinculo, who are on their way to Italy after coming from the wedding of Alonso’s daughter, Claribel, to the prince of Tunis in Africa. The royal party and the other mariners, with the exception of the unflappable Boatswain, begin to fear for their lives. Lightning cracks, and the mariners cry that the ship has been hit. Everyone prepares to sink.
The next scene begins much more quietly. Miranda and Prospero stand on the shore of their island, looking out to sea at the recent shipwreck. Miranda asks her father to do anything he can to help the poor souls in the ship. Prospero assures her that everything is all right and then informs her that it is time she learned more about herself and her past. He reveals to her that he orchestrated the shipwreck and tells her the lengthy story of her past, a story he has often started to tell her before but never finished. The story goes that Prospero was the Duke of Milan until his brother Antonio, conspiring with Alonso, the King of Naples, usurped his position. Kidnapped and left to die on a raft at sea, Prospero and his daughter survive because Gonzalo leaves them supplies and Prospero’s books, which are the source of his magic and power. Prospero and his daughter arrived on the island where they remain now and have been for twelve years. Only now, Prospero says, has Fortune at last sent his enemies his way, and he has raised the tempest in order to make things right with them once and for all.
After telling this story, Prospero charms Miranda to sleep and then calls forth his familiar spirit Ariel, his chief magical agent. Prospero and Ariel’s discussion reveals that Ariel brought the tempest upon the ship and set fire to the mast. He then made sure that everyone got safely to the island, though they are now separated from each other into small groups. Ariel, who is a captive servant to Prospero, reminds his master that he has promised Ariel freedom a year early if he performs tasks such as these without complaint. Prospero chastises Ariel for protesting and reminds him of the horrible fate from which he was rescued. Before Prospero came to the island, a witch named Sycorax imprisoned Ariel in a tree. Sycorax died, leaving Ariel trapped until Prospero arrived and freed him. After Ariel assures Prospero that he knows his place, Prospero orders Ariel to take the shape of a sea nymph and make himself invisible to all but Prospero.
Miranda awakens from her sleep, and she and Prospero go to visit Caliban, Prospero’s servant and the son of the dead Sycorax. Caliban curses Prospero, and Prospero and Miranda berate him for being ungrateful for what they have given and taught him. Prospero sends Caliban to fetch firewood. Ariel, invisible, enters playing music and leading in the awed Ferdinand. Miranda and Ferdinand are immediately smitten with each other. He is the only man Miranda has ever seen, besides Caliban and her father. Prospero is happy to see that his plan for his daughter’s future marriage is working, but decides that he must upset things temporarily in order to prevent their relationship from developing too quickly. He accuses Ferdinand of merely pretending to be the Prince of Naples and threatens him with imprisonment. When Ferdinand draws his sword, Prospero charms him and leads him off to prison, ignoring Miranda’s cries for mercy. He then sends Ariel on another mysterious mission.
On another part of the island, Alonso, Sebastian, Antonio, Gonzalo, and other miscellaneous lords give thanks for their safety but worry about the fate of Ferdinand. Alonso says that he wishes he never had married his daughter to the prince of Tunis because if he had not made this journey, his son would still be alive. Gonzalo tries to maintain high spirits by discussing the beauty of the island, but his remarks are undercut by the sarcastic sourness of Antonio and Sebastian. Ariel appears, invisible, and plays music that puts all but Sebastian and Antonio to sleep. These two then begin to discuss the possible advantages of killing their sleeping companions. Antonio persuades Sebastian that the latter will become ruler of Naples if they kill Alonso. Claribel, who would be the next heir if Ferdinand were indeed dead, is too far away to be able to claim her right. Sebastian is convinced, and the two are about to stab the sleeping men when Ariel causes Gonzalo to wake with a shout. Everyone wakes up, and Antonio and Sebastian concoct a ridiculous story about having drawn their swords to protect the king from lions. Ariel goes back to Prospero while Alonso and his party continue to search for Ferdinand.
Caliban, meanwhile, is hauling wood for Prospero when he sees Trinculo and thinks he is a spirit sent by Prospero to torment him. He lies down and hides under his cloak. A storm is brewing, and Trinculo, curious about but undeterred by Caliban’s strange appearance and smell, crawls under the cloak with him. Stephano, drunk and singing, comes along and stumbles upon the bizarre spectacle of Caliban and Trinculo huddled under the cloak. Caliban, hearing the singing, cries out that he will work faster so long as the “spirits” leave him alone. Stephano decides that this monster requires liquor and attempts to get Caliban to drink. Trinculo recognizes his friend Stephano and calls out to him. Soon the three are sitting up together and drinking. Caliban quickly becomes an enthusiastic drinker, and begins to sing.
Prospero puts Ferdinand to work hauling wood. Ferdinand finds his labor pleasant because it is for Miranda’s sake. Miranda, thinking that her father is asleep, tells Ferdinand to take a break. The two flirt with one another. Miranda proposes marriage, and Ferdinand accepts. Prospero has been on stage most of the time, unseen, and he is pleased with this development.
Stephano, Trinculo, and Caliban are now drunk and raucous and are made all the more so by Ariel, who comes to them invisibly and provokes them to fight with one another by impersonating their voices and taunting them. Caliban grows more and more fervent in his boasts that he knows how to kill Prospero. He even tells Stephano that he can bring him to where Prospero is sleeping. He proposes that they kill Prospero, take his daughter, and set Stephano up as king of the island. Stephano thinks this a good plan, and the three prepare to set off to find Prospero. They are distracted, however, by the sound of music that Ariel plays on his flute and tabor-drum, and they decide to follow this music before executing their plot.
Alonso, Gonzalo, Sebastian, and Antonio grow weary from traveling and pause to rest. Antonio and Sebastian secretly plot to take advantage of Alonso and Gonzalo’s exhaustion, deciding to kill them in the evening. Prospero, probably on the balcony of the stage and invisible to the men, causes a banquet to be set out by strangely shaped spirits. As the men prepare to eat, Ariel appears like a harpy and causes the banquet to vanish. He then accuses the men of supplanting Prospero and says that it was for this sin that Alonso’s son, Ferdinand, has been taken. He vanishes, leaving Alonso feeling vexed and guilty.
Prospero now softens toward Ferdinand and welcomes him into his family as the soon-to-be-husband of Miranda. He sternly reminds Ferdinand, however, that Miranda’s “virgin-knot” (IV.i.15) is not to be broken until the wedding has been officially solemnized. Prospero then asks Ariel to call forth some spirits to perform a masque for Ferdinand and Miranda. The spirits assume the shapes of Ceres, Juno, and Iris and perform a short masque celebrating the rites of marriage and the bounty of the earth. A dance of reapers and nymphs follows but is interrupted when Prospero suddenly remembers that he still must stop the plot against his life.
He sends the spirits away and asks Ariel about Trinculo, Stephano, and Caliban. Ariel tells his master of the three men’s drunken plans. He also tells how he led the men with his music through prickly grass and briars and finally into a filthy pond near Prospero’s cell. Ariel and Prospero then set a trap by hanging beautiful clothing in Prospero’s cell. Stephano, Trinculo, and Caliban enter looking for Prospero and, finding the beautiful clothing, decide to steal it. They are immediately set upon by a pack of spirits in the shape of dogs and hounds, driven on by Prospero and Ariel.
Prospero uses Ariel to bring Alonso and the others before him. He then sends Ariel to bring the Boatswain and the mariners from where they sleep on the wrecked ship. Prospero confronts Alonso, Antonio, and Sebastian with their treachery, but tells them that he forgives them. Alonso tells him of having lost Ferdinand in the tempest and Prospero says that he recently lost his own daughter. Clarifying his meaning, he draws aside a curtain to reveal Ferdinand and Miranda playing chess. Alonso and his companions are amazed by the miracle of Ferdinand’s survival, and Miranda is stunned by the sight of people unlike any she has seen before. Ferdinand tells his father about his marriage.
Ariel returns with the Boatswain and mariners. The Boatswain tells a story of having been awakened from a sleep that had apparently lasted since the tempest. At Prospero’s bidding, Ariel releases Caliban, Trinculo and Stephano, who then enter wearing their stolen clothing. Prospero and Alonso command them to return it and to clean up Prospero’s cell. Prospero invites Alonso and the others to stay for the night so that he can tell them the tale of his life in the past twelve years. After this, the group plans to return to Italy. Prospero, restored to his dukedom, will retire to Milan. Prospero gives Ariel one final task—to make sure the seas are calm for the return voyage—before setting him free. Finally, Prospero delivers an epilogue to the audience, asking them to forgive him for his wrongdoing and set him free by applauding.

N/B:
The Tempest is one of Shakespeare’s most enjoyable and magical plays, believed to have been written in 1610–11, and thought by many critics to be the last play that Shakespeare wrote alone. The story draws heavily on the tradition of the romance, and it was influenced by tragicomedy. It differs from Shakespeare's other plays in its observation of a stricter, more organised neoclassical style.

Teacher Wanjiku

An Interview with Wanjiku the Teacher
Arguably the biggest and wittiest female comedian in Kenya, Teacher Wanjiku demystifies herself, uncovering her private life as she talks about dating, her daughter and how life has changed after her great breakthrough

Who is Teacher Wanjiku?
Teacher Wanjiku: In my comedy character, I am a humble artiste trying to make a living. I am a single mother of a young daughter who will be joining class one next year. I live in Dandora, Nairobi.

When did you make your debut in acting and comedy?
TW: Well, Wanjiku was a character from a Heartstrings play called 43rd Kenyan tribe. That was four years ago. The director was very impressed. I realised I could make people laugh. Two years later, I made a comeback through the Churchill Live show where I did the first show on the laptops for schools debate. From that, I got over 200,000 views on Youtube, the most views ever in the show. After the exposure, the offers got crazy.

The classroom skits are super hilarious and out of the box. Who comes up with the concepts?
TW: It is a group contribution. I come up with the ideas and write the skit lessons then the panel hammers it out and the director, Victor Ber, gives direction and approvals.

How do you come up with the final skit?
TW: We do rehearsals from Tuesday to Thursday. It is a passionate exercise and one has to go through scripts over and over to come with the final piece.

How long have you been acting?
TW: Eight years now. However, I got my big break in February this year thanks to the Churchill show.

The season is coming to an end. What next for teacher Wanjiku?
TW: I have big plans after the season ends in February (next year). I am busy working on some big acting projects. I will reveal the plans when the right time comes.

Is Teacher Wanjiku a perpetual character or was it just for the Churchill show?
TW: She is a perpetual character. Character accents can be seasonal. You can not keep on cracking jokes the same way every time as your fans will get bored with you. The character will soon change.

So we will soon be able to see another side of Teacher Wanjiku or you, in your true personality?
TW: Lets say Teacher Wanjiku will expose her true self come next year. Brace yourselves up!

Do you ever get tired of cracking jokes?
TW: As a teacher? Never! Sometimes the character is even funny to me, so funny that I even laugh at my teacher image. I want to believe am funny.

What is one misconception people have of you?
TW: I hear people asking why I shrub so much. They also wonder why I dress like a clown. I am not going to answer them yet.

Is comedy what you grew up wanting to do?
TW: Wanjiku never wanted to be a teacher but ‘Teacher’ is now shaping up Wanjiku and my fans are having the last laugh on this.

P: How is it being a celebrity and a single mum?
TW: I love it. My daughter is also funny and she could probably take the stage one day.

You are the Airtel ambassador. How did you hit that jackpot…I mean, I am told its good money?
TW: I got a call from them (Airtel) and at first I thought it was all but a joke. It was the first major endorsement deal in my acting career. Their creative team is fantastic. We more or less think alike and that made things easy for both sides.

What has changed since this mega breakthrough?
TW: Well, honestly, it was a great deal. I can’t complain. Now, when people see me in a matatu they wonder why I am not driving my own car. Some even say since then, I have developed a new accent…English so to speak…

But has this helped to complement your comedy act?
TW: Definitely. It has turned my life around. This is great exposure. I was in Kisumu and Siaya recently and everyone knows me from the advert they see on TV and the posters. It has pushed me to another level.

What do you do when you’re not acting?
TW: I love swimming and reading.

How is the comedy platform for women considering it is a male dominated?
TW: Starting out can be real hard. It takes a lot of patience. The problem with most lady comedians is that they don't take their act seriously. To them, it is more or less a sideshow plan.

How is it like…dating Teacher Wanjiku?
TW: Well, I am open-minded and I am human as well. When someone comes along, we shall see how that goes. One day, I may come to the show with a husband…who knows?

Don't mess with Kansiime comedy show

Ann Kansiime: The story of a funny lucky girl

She is testimony that women can really be funny. Have you watched Ann Kansiime deliver her jokes? If you haven’t, then you probably haven’t had a good laugh in a while, writes Christine W. Wanjala.

It is a cool Thursday morning, but in Ann Kansiime’s world, it is just the perfect day to pay homage to all, or at least most, of the colours of the rainbow. I must add it is all a very tasteful affair completed with a black jacket and black boots.
One of the first things you notice about her is her energy, and amiable nature. In no time, we are chatting like old friends despite never having met before. “I have put on so much weight,” she says in response to a compliment on how the screen does not do her looks justice. Of course, I do not see the weight even if she makes an effort to stand and show me her supposedly fuller figure. Kansiime looks perfectly trim despite saying she does not work out at all.

The age factor
With her carefully put together look complete with impeccable eye makeup, Anne Kansiime looks like a perfect example of a girly girl, which makes her confession a few minutes later about being a tomboy odd. “I just started being a girl. Actually, I am in a phase where I am excited about being a woman so I love anything that makes them appear more feminine. I end up looking like a girl instead,” she laughs,
I think her girlish look is more to do with her very youthful appearance and diminutive size. She could pass for a teenager. “It is a good thing I guess. I am flattered when people think I am younger than I actually am,” she says, then narrates of a lady who approached her back in the Theatre Factory days and advised her to complete high school first. “She was tongue tied when I told her I was in my final year at campus,” says Kansiime,
She attributes it all to heredity (she has been told she is a carbon copy of her mom in her 20’s) and some luck on the side (something she is going to repeat a lot during our interview). So, what is her age? “Come April 13, I will be turning 27,” she says.
Kansiime says she plans to settle down and start a family when she finally starts looking her age. In the mean time, she will be moving ahead with her career. Currently in the studio at Swangz Avenue working on an album, which will be out soon on, of all things, nursery rhymes. “I love children; they are so innocent. I find it unfortunate that there are hardly any songs for children,” she explains. She does an acapella for me and I can already see children in love with the sweet melodious voice.
She was born and raised in Kabale to a now retired banker father and a farmer mother. “My mother grew everything except sweets, sugar and cooking oil,” she says.

When it all started
It was in Bweranyangi Girls Secondary School where she majored in music, scoring a clean ‘A’. In true-blue Kiga honesty, she tells me how she came to Kampala for the first time to attend campus at Makerere University. In her second year at Makerere, Kansiime joined Theatre Factory, the pioneer comedy outfit in Kampala that targeted a corporate audience. She narrates how it happened;
“I had parts in the radio drama Rock Point, with some of the then theatre factory members like Richard Tuwangye and in between recordings, we would sit and just chat. They found me funny and asked whether I would like to go and try my hand at Comedy with them in Theatre Factory.” She did, and they must have loved her performance because she was asked to go back the next week.
Her star has risen over the years, moving with Fun Factory when Theatre Factory split, and becoming a YouTube comedy sensation of sorts. Today, she seems to be all over the place, a thing for which she has but a very simple explanation, “I am now on a daily show with MINIBUZZ, and there is the Go-TV advert, but I was there all along,” she says.

On making people laugh, without fail
Humour does not just come naturally to her, it runs in the family. “I am lucky (there we go again) my mom is a hilarious human being,” says Kansiime of a fact she only came to appreciate only after meeting other people’s mothers who were not so funny. “I had always assumed all mothers were like mine,” says the fourth born of six children.
The comedienne also credits her younger sister who is so funny that she challenges Kansiime. “I am lucky I got into comedy first so she will always be Ann’s sister. I could never have matched up to her if she had got in before me,” she says. No sibling rivalry though, as Kansiime says little sister is most helpful and a big fan. As a performer, Kansiime is not really worried about disappointing her fans, ever. “I had fans long before I became aware of it. I was just too busy enjoying myself on stage,” she says. Fate has also been kind, blessing her with the ability to channel so many characters. For some of her roles, she draws from experience.
“I have been most of the characters I play. A child, a teenager, a student, a girl from the village, a young woman, a Mukiga... okay, maybe not a bow-legged househelp or MP, but a lot of the others,” she says.
On why there are so few females in stand-up comedy who make it big, she says the industry is more difficult for women. “There are jokes male comedians make and people crack up, yet if attempted by a woman, it is frowned upon,” she says, intimating that she has never cracked one of those vulgar jokes despite them being the trademark of some of her male colleagues. This, she attributes to same old “one rule for the hen and another for the cock”, that women should be humble and submissive.
“Being a comedienne means I am judged twice over, as a public figure, and a woman who makes jokes for a living,” she says. Her formula for sidestepping the pitfalls of having to recycle jokes or resort to the vulgar talk is simple. “I become the joke myself. I am lucky (there’s that word again) people enjoy it,” she says.

Planning for the future
Despite being passionately in love with the arts and acting, the Kansiime of five years ago could not imagine she would be where she is or doing what she is doing now. “I thought I would be at home changing diapers and raising my children,” she says.
Her parents are also pleasantly surprised that she made a living off comedy and acting. In another five years, she sees herself self-employed, with a show of her own. “I also hope to open up a day-care centre. Then, of course, I will have my own children to suffocate with love,” she adds.
Speaking of love, does she have a special man in her life? “No, not right now,” she says. But she has a pretty good idea of what that man should be like. “I, like the next girl likes a man who can make me laugh,” she says.
As we wind up the interview, Kansiime lets me know what she really thinks about the direction her life has taken. “I am lucky, really lucky,” she says modestly.
Well, there is that, but I also think that people have fallen in love with her brand of funny. I know I did!

The Xyz Show

A  look at the award-winning ‘ XYZ Show’ , its crew members and founders, the show’s early days, the struggles they went through and finally, the triumph.

Everyone thought the guys behind The XYZ Show were crazy. And for the longest time, viewers and media practitioners alike anticipated seeing those behind the hilarious political satire show being bulldozed to court.
If anything, it was the opposite, the politicians it so brutally satirises are glued to their screens every time the show airs.
Whether it is Martha Karua being the spoiler, or Uhuru and Ruto being the pranksters of the class as they are perceived to be in real life, XYZ is always cleverly treading on thin ice.
For their courage, the show’s creators have been awarded Best Television Series at the first-ever Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards in Lagos, Nigeria. It is not the Oscars, but we are finally recognising our own in a grander way than has been done before.
Seth McFarlane’s Family Guy and American Dad satire are similar to XYZ  in that they attack, in a not so direct way, the moral, social, and political ills that have become so entrenched in society, that we often do not recognise them unless they are pointed out to us.

So, what do you need to do to get your very own puppet?
A former writer for the show, Kwamchetsi Makokha, says that usually, “characters volunteered themselves by their outrageousness”.
He gives the example of former Bumula MP Wakoli Bifwoli and others because they were regular actors on the Kenyan political and social scene. There were also generic characters, he says, like Mwaniki, the stereotypical Kikuyu shopkeeper on Kirinyaga Road.

Did anyone ever sue?
Silly question, we know, but we had to ask.
“It would take a very foolish person to sue for a caricature. What would the case be — that one should not have been made fun of?” was Makokha’s response.
The co-founder and producer of the show, Marie Lora-Mungai, explains there is a lot you can do with puppets without running into trouble.
They might not have sued, but some were not pleased. Vice-President Kalonzo Musyoka is said to have been upset about being shown in a shirt that was green on one side and red on the other — to caricature his perceived indecision on the constitution referendum campaign.
Former Rongo MP Dalmas Otieno complained at the end of the first season about XYZ caricaturing Raila. First Lady Lucy Kibaki reportedly loved the show, as did former Gichugu MP Martha Karua.

So let us face it, the show is on now, it is a hit, it is an award winner, you love it now. But what did creator Gado have to go through?
The Backstory
The XYZ Show was launched in May 2009 by co-producers Gado and Marie Lora-Mungai.
While on a study trip to Paris in 2003, Gado visited the set of Les Guignols de l’info, or the “News Puppets”, a a popular French spoof newscast featuring latex puppets.
To Gado, it was immediately obvious that the same concept would not only be a huge success in Kenya, but could also have an important social impact by exposing, with humour, the rampant corruption and mismanagement of the country.
Back in Kenya, Gado tried to sell the idea to several local TV stations, but many had trouble understanding the concept. In 2005, Gado sent sculptor Gerald Olewe to France for a month.
There, Olewe was trained by the team of experts who create the French puppets and he learned how to work with sophisticated materials such as foaming latex. He came back with a puppet of President Mwai Kibaki in his luggage.
Two more years of struggle went by until in July 2007 when Gado scrapped together a few thousand shillings and got a little money from the French embassy to produce a pilot for the show. With the pilot in hand, Gado embarked on a new round of visits to the TV stations. He hit a new wall, or rather two. One, the show was political and controversial. Two, it was expensive and no one wanted to pay for it.
In November 2007, Gado met Marie Lora-Mungai, who was then a foreign correspondent for AFP TV and Reuters TV. He showed her the XYZ pilot. Straight away, Marie thought that the show absolutely needed to be on the air — and she knew she could help.
The next month, all hell broke loose in Kenya. At that time, it became even more obvious that Kenya needed a show such as XYZ that could provide a platform to tackle difficult topics with humour and perspective.
Marie suggested a complete change in strategy to put XYZ on the air: if the show was too expensive for local stations, they should then appeal to international donors for funding. She and Gado embarked on a year-long journey into Nairobi’s NGO and foreign embassies world, pitching XYZ relentlessly.
Several courageous and enthusiastic donors came through with some money and in May 2009, the first episode of The XYZ Show was finally aired.

So what happens when they cannot quite find the right voice for a character?
XYZ director Brian Kyallo Msafiri had this to say:
“Whenever we can’t get the perfect voice, we try to explore further the character’s characteristics — body movement, facial reactions, favourite words, hobbies, so as to generate a character closest to the subject we are trying to mimic.”
Also, it appears there might be a job opening at the show.
“We have not been able to find someone who can mimic Uhuru Kenyatta, and we are calling on Kenyans who believe they can do it to get in touch with us,” he Kyallo appealed.
Gado and Marie’s humble comments after the show’s win were:
“We would like to thank our audience for supporting us… the entire crew of XYZ, the Buni Media team, and Kenyans for their support.”

Below is a list of the people who play various roles on the xyz show
DOREEN KARUA
Plays: Martha Karua
Day job:
Owner, 512 Agency
Have you met Martha?  Yes, I can say now we are friends. We first met in 2011 when she had come to The XYZ show set to see her puppet and meet the voice behind it. She always laughs when she sees me. I attended some of her events during the campaign. People think she’s my mom.
How are you similar to Martha?  I’m strong-minded but have room for negotiation, I’m a go-getter and we both love politics; I was a student leader (secretary social welfare, KUSA 2007) at Kenyatta University. I also gave her a hand with her campaign.
TONY MBOYO
Plays: Uhuru Kenyatta
Day job:
I work here; I also double as a puppeteer.
Describe Uhuru’s voice: His voice, like mine, is not so deep; a bit husky. At the beginning his voice had a bit of arrogance and anger. Now it’s more civil, more composed. More stately, if you will.
PAUL MUNG’ALA MBUVI
Plays: Mike Mbuvi “Sonko”
Day job: Kenyatta University student, studying biochemistry.
Any relation to Sonko? None. Why him: I’m in his voice range. But I also work at honing this skill by watching loads of YouTube videos, looking out for body language. He speaks differently in rallies to, say, the way he does in press conferences or at small gatherings. I’ve nailed him about 50 per cent, and I want to improve that.
NICK ODHIAMBO
Plays: Jeff Koinange
Day job: Presenter, Radio Africa
Why Jeff Koinange?  He’s easy to imitate because he exaggerates things. He pokes fun at people. He says “Oh, my” a lot. I suspect that he does all these things to stay awake during interviews. It helps that my voice is as deep as his.
DENNIS MUTUKU
Plays: Raila Odinga
Day job: Radio Presenter, Musya FM, Royal Media.
What’s a Kamba doing imitating Agwambo? I have been doing him since high school days. I was always that guy in class who would imitate any teacher. Raila is an interesting character because his speeches are never dull; they are punctuated with stories and imagery.

Lupita Nyong'o interview

Kenyan actress Lupita Nyong'o has become a new critics' darling after her breakout role in last year's hit movie "12 Years A Slave."
Since then, the award ceremonies and opportunities to dazzle photographers have been plentiful for Nyong'o, whose mesmerizing performance as Patsey earned her numerous accolades and recognition, including an Oscar nomination for Best Actress in a Supporting Role.
Though all this attention is new to Nyong'o, who was born in Mexico to Kenyan parents, the young actress seems to enjoy all the hype around her. But there is much more to her story than how she captivates the cameras on the red carpet.
Here is what she had to say about her journey from Kenya to Hollywood.

How did you end up being born in Mexico?
Lupita Nyong'o: My father is a politician. At the time he was also a professor of political science and he was organizing for democracy in Kenya. We were under an autocratic regime and after a series of unfortunate events, including the disappearance of his brother, he went into political exile in Mexico. I was born in his last year there.

So you were born in Mexico but grew up in Kenya.
LN: Yes, all my conscious memories are in Kenya until when I was 16 my parents sent me back to Mexico to learn Spanish. I grew up in Nairobi, which is the capital of Kenya, so it's hustle and bustle and there's always something going on. I come from a very big family and we're very close knit so I had lots of time with my family.
My parents raised all of us to just pursue our hearts' desires. They were like "figure out what your purpose is on this world and then do it and do it to excellence; no matter what it is, whether it's being a janitor or a doctor, as long as you're filling your life's purpose then we're good." No pressure to pursue one thing or another, although I will say my father was very upset when I dropped physics though.

Not too long after you arrived to Mexico you decided to go to school in the United States. One of the things I read about was your discovery of race in America and how it's treated.
LN: I grew up in a world where the majority of people were black so that wasn't the defining quality of anyone. When you're describing someone, you don't start out with "he's black, he's white." No, I was a girl, I was my ethnic group Luo, I was middle class, I was many things before I was black, so it was like a rearrangement when I came here and realized that in America that's the first thing that people notice about me. You don't hear that word, "black, black" very often in Kenya to tell you the truth, so that was definitely jarring.

"12 years A Slave" is your first feature film. Where do you go inside yourself to play a role like that of Patsey with such generosity of spirit?
LN: I don't believe that we are really as individual as we think we are and that's what makes the profession of acting possible -- that we can empathize with things that are more than our personal, limited experience. And I think that you do work and like Oprah [Winfrey] said to me, "you let God walk in the door." I think it's less about going into myself than opening myself; just opening myself to the research, the script, the autobiography, the other things that I read, the other things I saw and just trying to immerse myself in a world that I personally don't know -- but I know that my spirit does -- and can know if I allow myself to open up to it.

There is something about acting that's mysterious and magical because there is only so much I can do to prepare and then I have to just let go and breathe and believe that it will come through.
Because I think if I had been required to play Patsey in any sort of methodical way where I go in and I never go out until we wrap the picture, I don't think I would have survived emotionally because it's heavy. But having those moments of lightness and separation from the work we were doing on set was very important, even to fortifying our trust for each other while we were doing the work..

How do you feel about all the hype surrounding you since you since "12 Years A Slave"?
LN: I didn't know how, and we all didn't know how the world would take this film. It's not easy subject matter. It's heavy but it's beautiful and you hope that people would at least open their eyes to see it -- and then they did. So my first feeling was relief that it had been so well received and then they just kept receiving it and celebrating it and the conversation has been developing and shifting; it's been so exciting and for me to be part of that celebration and my work to be lauded in all these ways has been amazing.
And I've felt relief as well that people are registering Patsey's loftiness -- in praising me I feel like her spirit is being uplifted, really, because what I met in those pages of Solomon Northup's book was heartbreaking -- and it still breaks my heart -- and inspiring, and I had the privilege of bringing her back to life. I'm just happy and filled with gratitude to have had the experience in the first place and for it to be so well received.

Surprising Facts About Lupita Nyong’o

here are 10 things to know about the statuesque actress with a flashy smile and almost flawless fashion sense.
She straddles many worlds: Nyong'o was born in Mexico when her Kenyan parents were in political exile. Her family later returned to Kenya, where she spent most of her childhood. Her first name, she says, is the short version of the word "Guadalupe." She later went to the United States, where she got her undergraduate degree from Hampshire College in Massachusetts, and later graduated from Yale School of Drama in 2012.
She has a connection to Obama: Nyong'o is a Luo, the same tribe as President Barack Obama's father.
She's multilingual: In addition to English and her native Luo, the actress speaks Spanish, Swahili and conversational Italian.
She's been a star-crossed lover: Her first big acting break came when she was 14 and played Juliet in "Romeo and Juliet" at a Kenyan theater. "That was amazing ... since before that I had been a village girl at a school show," she tells Arise Entertainment 360. "I just came to life on stage, I just loved it so much."
She's also a TV star: Before her big movie debut, Nyong'o was a regular on the Kenyan television series "Shuga." The series, produced by MTV, was a hip portrayal of contemporary Kenyan youth aimed at spreading HIV awareness. It was so popular, it later aired in various African nations.

This is not her first brush with an international movie: As an undergraduate, Nyong'o worked on the production crew of "The Constant Gardener," starring Ralph Fiennes. The movie, filmed in Kenya, became a turning point for her. Fiennes made her realize her passion when he told her to only get into acting if she feels that she can't live without it. "It's not what I wanted to hear, but it's what I needed to hear," she says.
She's had her signature crop for years: Before settling for her trademark short hair, Nyong'o went through the usual hustles of finding a hairstyle that works for her. "I got fed up of going to the hair salon. I just wanted less time grooming so that I could get more stuff done." At age 19, she shaved off her hair. "It was so liberating," she says.
She had to go deep for her role: Nyong'o gives an emotional, raw performance in "12 Years a Slave," a movie set in the pre-Civil War United States. It's a story about Solomon Northup, a free black man who is kidnapped and sold into slavery. Their tyrannical master has an unhealthy obsession with Patsey, her character. Suicidal, she copes by working harder than everyone else in the cotton fields and forming a close relationship with Solomon.
She's an awards darling: Her intense role as Patsey has earned her rave reviews and a slew of nominations. They include best supporting actress for the Oscars and Golden Globes and Critics' Choice movie awards, and a Screen Actors Guild Award for outstanding performance by a female actor in a supporting role.
Spielberg’s The Color Purple Gave Her the Acting Bug.
When she saw Whoopi Goldberg’s performance as Celie in Stephen Spielberg’s The Color Purple, Nyong’o says it was the first time she believed that she could really become an actor. For this reason, she was especially honored to join Oprah Winfrey (who also starred in the film) at The Hollywood Reporter’s annual Actress’s Roundtable.
In My Genes Is Her Award-Winning Documentary.
While in college, Nyong’o made a documentary about albinism in Kenya. She has described albinos as the one group of people that unifies all races. A friend who was having very specific experiences related to albinism inspired the project, which went on to win first prize at the 2008 Five College Film Festival.
Her Entire Family Is Kind of a Big Deal.
Nyong’o may be the Oscar nominee of the bunch, but she comes from an accomplished and fascinating bunch. Her father is a Kenyan Senator, her mother heads up the Africa Cancer Foundation and runs her own company, her cousin Isis made the Forbes list of Most Powerful African Women, and three minutes on her brother’s Instagram page tells us that he is a pop culture movement in and of himself. He’s also her biggest fan.
You've not seen the last of her: Her next movie, "Non-Stop," features Liam Neeson and comes out on February 28.

Mali on NTV

Mali (United by Blood: Divided by Greed) is a Kenyan television series and the first ongoing soap opera in East Africa. It premiered on October 12, 2011 on NTV (Kenya) and was broadcast in Uganda starting in 2012. Mali is the first Kenyan programme in its genre to run three times a week on NTV.

Mali revolves around the lives of an affluent family, rich to the bone but like every family of this nature, plagued with deeper public hidden issues. The polygamous patriarch of the family is a chauvinist who runs his two homes like a military camp.
The family members are different in character, cultural, social and economic status but are all embroiled in effervescent tales of love, money, power, self gain, seduction and success.
The drama unfolds when the patriarch; Mr. G Mali, collapses and dies without leaving a will behind. This leaves his two families embroiled in a journey of greed, deceit, division and discovery of horrifying family and personal secrets that would have best remained hidden.
Mali is a story of obsession to do what is right but also get what is owed. MALI will take audiences through a journey of extremes that society, the family unit and the individual would go to in the pursuit of love, money and ultimate happiness.
Mali takes its audiences beyond the trappings of affluence to the reality of a family broken and divided and the personal and collective journeys each member makes to reunite the single family unit despite personal odds and societal differences.

Tujuane Show

6 Valuable Life Lessons We Can Learn From Tujuane

Since its’ inception back in 2013, Tujuane has become one of the most highly-rated and most –watched shows to date. It does not only provide great entertainment and great laughs but we get to learn some valuable life lessons that will help us meander through the dark, nerve wracking world that is dating.

Here are a few lessons we can learn from Tujuane
1.Do not reveal too much information
Information about how messy your parents’ divorce was or how you mum cheated on your father is a total no-no. That information should be saved for when you know your date better, it’s too emotionally intense for a first date. Also talking about your horde of ex-girlfriends or violent ex-boyfriend is a total no-no
2. Do not expect too much
Keep an open mind. Don’t expect your date to look like something from a playboy centerfold or a Greek god.

Apollo:Greek God
Do not expect him to be debonair or to behave in 'your type' of way. High expectations will only lead to disappointment and your date could be headed for a fast downward spiral that might to lead to a sad graceless end.

3.  Be Gracious
If your date does not measure up to your expectations, be polite, no need to be boorish.

Someone’s feelings are at stake here and trust me you do not want to be lampooned by KOT for being a bitch! Or worse losing your job for saying something rude. There is no need for use of words such as Ghetto or Ugly!

4. Don’t Talk too much
Talk in moderation, It’s a conversation not a monologue, do not hog the conversation even if you secretly think that you are more interesting than your date
5. Do Not Invite A Stranger To Your Home On Your First Date
Your house is your sanctuary. Do not invite strangers to your house. Period
6. An Invite To A Girl’s house Does not Necessarily Mean You Are Getting Lucky
This one was one of the most disastrous dates in Tujuane ever. So this girl invites a lad to her house for a Lady and the Tramp kind of meal, spaghetti and Meatballs. Five minutes had barely passed and the guy was already hounding the girl for a kiss!

I cannot emphasize this more; an invite to girls house is not codeword for sex. It’s just an invite ,do not read too much into it.

Churchill Show

Churchill show  is a hilarious weekly one-hour skit  which was created by one Daniel Ndambuki, who also goes by the stage name Churchill and is also known as Mwalimu King'ang'i on his radio breakfast show.

Each episode of Churchill Live is recorded before a live studio audience at The Carnivore Restaurant in Nairobi on Tuesdays and airs on Nation Television (NTV) on Thursdays.
Ndambuki anchors the show, co-hosted by guest comedians. The result is a charming and funny talk show with a variety of guests including politicians, artists, singers and ordinary citizens. It covers a wide range of topics from the hilarity of young school children to more serious issues that help viewers make sense of current affairs.
The show has won dozens of awards, including at the Kenya CHAT Awards and the Kalasha Film and Television Awards.
Here is a chat with Ndambuki about how he broke into comedy and the industry's prospects in Kenya.

How did you start comedy?
Daniel Ndambuki: I first joined a group called Public Noise Makers, which performed comic skits at the Kenya National Theatre before Nation Television gave us an opportunity to feature in their comedy programme called "In True Colours". It was a collection of comedians performing in front of a live audience.
After the programme ended, we created Churchill Live for continuity and to give upcoming comedians a platform on which to perform. I always wanted to do a show that would invite guests that people do not know much about, but who are doing tremendous things for themselves and the country. … We have really got a great thing going.

Were you always into comedy?
Ndambuki: Not really. I am told that I was shy while growing up in the Eastern region of the country. Before breaking into comedy, I did odd jobs to make ends meet. In the hustle and bustle of life, I interacted with a lot of people from diverse cultures and races. I learned to take life easy and not complain but look at the funny side of it.

How would you describe what you do on stage?
Ndambuki: [It is] serious because trying to make people laugh is not a joke. It is giving life a light touch so that people can laugh and reflect on it at the same time.
We have 43 tribes and there are lots of stereotypes, [but] we laugh at them in a very sensitive way so as not to hurt people. Our diversity is our strength and I try to demystify the stereotypes and propagate unity and peaceful co-existence. We are trying to shape our country into a better nation.

What is it like being a comedian in Kenya?
Ndambuki: Kenya has enormous opportunities at its disposal, and comedy is one of them. The people are appreciative. There are also challenges and for the majority of [Kenyans] comedy offers an escape.
Comedy is also a business and it is tough to get a break. There are emerging platforms [on which] to perform. To be good, one has to put a lot of work in to ensure the audience gets value for their money.

How has comedy changed in Kenya over the years?
Ndambuki : Stand-up comedy is taking shape now. Before, it used to be plays only, but now other forms are emerging as comic writing develops.
Many of the country's television stations are starting comedy programmes for their viewers, which is very good because they are creating opportunities and creating interest … it is a matter of time before it becomes a full-blown industry.

What advice would you give to aspiring comedians?
Ndambuki: In any venture there must be a leap of faith that one can make it. There are highs and lows in comedy. It is always [better] to try than later regret having not tried.
I believe one can also learn it like any other job. We have part-time comedians who are doing other jobs on the side. Aspiring comedians should aspire to be themselves. Everyone has an identity and they should strive to bring it out.

5 Career Lessons From Churchill aka ‘Mwalimu Kin’gan’gi’

From humble beginnings of acting high school literature and Fasihi set books, Churchill has carved a niche for himself as a morning radio presenter at Classic 105, a top MC at Corporate events, and the host of the most watched comedy show in Kenya, Churchill show.

Who better than to pick career lesson form than him? Here are 5 of them.
1. Non- Traditional careers pay.
While many of us would scoff at a person that makes a living from comedy, Churchill has proved that the once looked down upon careers- comedy, music, dancing, and acting, can put food on the table. He, plus musicians like Nameless, Juliani, Wyre, among others, are helping push the envelope for the Kenyan art scene, and proving that one doesn’t have to be a doctor, lawyer, engineer, or manager to make some good money.
2. Start Small.
While many of us wish to start big, Churchill did start from the small tasks he was assigned in the school plays. A story is told that he used to sleep on the floor in a one room apartment in Mlolongo. Although we cannot verify that, what we can note is that he has indeed come from far.

At the time, he probably didn’t consider that he would rise to the position he occupies today, but currently, he must be looking back and wondering if indeed he is still the same person.
3. Continuously innovate.
As fellow comedian ‘Jalang’o often says, acting is one of the hardest jobs. One has to come up with fresh jokes every now and then or their  jokes will be considered stale.  Churchill has invested in learning his trade, reading wide, and often borrowing and then localizing his lines. Where he has run out of ideas, he has invited others such as Eric Omondi to stand up for him- heck, even Chris Rock runs out of lines and has fulltime writers to help him come up with new jokes. He crafted Churchill live from scratch, and from the show, he has achieved massive publicity.
4. Learn to multi- task.
The era of sticking to one employer is long gone. In a way, we are turning out to be consultants, who sell our skills to our clients- employers. Even though Churchill has a full time job as a co-presenter with Maina Kageni on the Classic FM Morning show, he still manages to perform some other corporate gigs, to supplement his income.
5. Mentor others.
Churchill has brought on board new comedians, something which the audience did not appreciate at the beginning. Through his show, we now know of new comedians, like the Kibra guy with the Luhya accent, the police guy with the Kalenjin accent, and the guy with the Meru accent. Even though these new comedians have taken time to perfect on their act, they are catching up pretty fast, and who knows, one, or even all of them, could surpass Churchill in due time.
